So you landed in Split airport, you take a look around and let out a sigh of relief to finally be on solid ground after a long flight from Copenhagen to Split.

First thing you’ll notice is that you aren’t jet lagged since Croatia and Denmark share the same time zone, but enough about that you came here to enjoy Croatia and have a great time, right? 🙂

Your journey starts by taking a transfer from Split airport to the beautiful town of Split; which we can help with by taking one of our transfers 🙂

Once you step foot in the heart of Split first thing you’ll notice is the salty sea breeze and the sight of crystal blue water, impressive isn’t it 😉
You’ll soon be mesmerized as you start to aimlessly walking around, appreciating the sights and architecture of the giant Diocletian’s palace that seems like a small town of it’s own; known as the ”Old town” by the people.

The Diocletian palace is an ancient palace built for the Roman Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the fourth century AD, that today forms about half the old town of Split, Croatia. While it is referred to as a “palace” because of its intended use as the retirement residence of Diocletian, the term can be misleading as the structure is massive and more resembles a large fortress: about half of it was for Diocletian’s personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison.
Diocletian built the massive palace in preparation for his retirement on 1 May 305 AD. It lies in a bay on the south side of a short peninsula running out from the Dalmatian coast, four miles from Salona, the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. The terrain slopes gently seaward and is typical karst, consisting of low limestone ridges running east to west with marl in the clefts between them.

The palace isn’t just filled with culture and old roman architecture because over the years the citizens of Split and the palace slowly adapted the beautiful palace to suit their own needs. Having four entrances called “Bronze”, “Iron”, “Silver” and “Gold” “Doors” respectively, each positioned on one of the four sides.

While exploring the maze like streets of the palace you might have noticed a forest hill. Well, that hill is called ”Marjan” but we’ll get back to that later because first we have to find you a place to stay at, don’t worry because we have several places and offers ranging from studio apartments to villa’s to suit your fancy. So don’t fear about getting something out of your price range 🙂

The Marjan peninsula with Sustjepan was proclaimed a significant landscape reserve (park-forest) and entered into the Register of Protected Areas maintained the Institute of Nature Protection on 16 December 1964.
As set in the Croatia’s Nature Protection Act, a park-forest is the nature protection category aimed to preservation of natural and planted forests of significant landscaping value or intended for relaxation and recreation.
In the 1920’s Marjan was a large construction site. Following completion of the stairway, a plateau and terrace with a stone railing were constructed, known today as the Marjan First Lookout (Prva Marjanska Vidilica). Because of the breathtaking views from this terrace to the city down below at the foot of Marjan, some of the most beautiful photographs of Split have been taken from here, witnessing it’s development over the decades. This is a very popular resting place of the locals and their guests alike.
It truly is a spectacular view!

In ancient times Emperor Diocletian built his palace a few minutes walk from Marjan. This opulent palace-city was actually inhabited by up to 8,000 to 10,000 people, who required parks and recreation space, Diocletian therefore organized some areas of Marjan nearer to the palace as a park.

The forest hill Marjan is a great spot to just relax and walk around in as you take in the sights of nature and listen to the rustling of leaves. Even if you are getting hot and tired from the heat there’s a load of beaches on the outskirts offering shade for anyone wanting to take a dip in the clean sea.

I know what you might be thinking “Most of the beaches in Split are crowded, how does this help me?” Well fear not because there’s a bunch of small secluded beaches where you can be all alone on.

Once you are done relaxing on the beach it’s time to go back to the town for a quick bite to eat, whether it be a restaurant or a street vendor you’ll soon learn that Croatia has a lot of things to offer 🙂

Whether you are feeling up for it you can always take a catamaran or ferry to one of the numerous islands from Split catamaran port. The islands offering one of the best beaches like the “Golden horn” beach on Bol, perfect for families and friends to have fun and relax on 🙂

All in all it’s always best to explore the town on foot and visit places that are often left out of most guides and tours.
