History of Diocletian Palace walking tour Split

Diocletian Palace is one of the best preserved monuments of the Roman architecture in the world. The ruins of Diocletian’s Palace, built between the late 3rd and the early 4th centuries A.D., can be found throughout the city.
The Emperor’s Palace was built as a combination of a luxury villa – summer house and a Roman military camp (castrum), divided into four parts with two main streets. Southern part of the Palace was, in this scheme, intended for the Emperor’s apartment and appropriate governmental and religious ceremonies, while the north part was for the Imperial guard – the military, servants, storage etc.

The famous TV series “Game of Thrones” had several shots filmed in the palace and it’s basements; where Daenerys kept her dragons. Split and other neighbouring towns had an influx of tourists since the show started. The show granting an opportunity for a couple of walking tours to be created visiting the filming locations. Such as Split and Dubrovnik.

Returning visitors of Croatia, Split in particular mostly come back for the beaches and the friendly atmosphere of people that make this city great. Most locals offering a friendly hand of assistance to any tourists seeming lost or confused to what to do, whilst also being generally talkative and engaging conversations with people. Whilst it can seem like Diocletian Palace is like a maze that you are bound to get lost in, don’t worry too much; after all the way to find the exit is always to follow one side. Diocletian Palace in particular being a beautiful structure that is bound to peak your interest.
