That’s an interesting question.

Food is the most important part of visiting a new foreign country some say. The various cuisine making most people water at the mouth from seeing some utterly delicious works of art. Whilst many will enjoy Croatian cuisine it is considered a meat eater country. Whilst there are a couple of vegetarian friendly meals you won’t see many of em. 🙂

You can’t experience the full specter of Croatia without experiencing the cuisine it has to offer. Luckily for you we will handle the list of food that the country has to offer. Starting off with food made out of meat we have plenty to offer but here is a list of one of the main dishes you will find in our stunning country.

Čevapi

Čevapi are one of those foods that you can grab on the go or sit down in a restaurant and enjoy. Taste the rolled up minced meat heaven in a bun called “Lepinja” filled with Aivar and Onions to accentuate the taste of the meat. Whilst not specifically originating from Croatia it has become a staple part of the Balkan countries.

Peka

Peka is a method of cooking a piece of lamb, veal using ash. The meat is usually slow cooked two to two and a half hours by this method which leaves the meat tender and juicy; a true dalmatian way of cooking 🙂 The slow cooked meat surrounded by potatoes and various other condiments make the meat oh so tender, being one of Croatia’s most famous and delicious food among locals.

Fritule

Even if you are a meat enthusiast you will surely fancy something sweet and delicate after a large feast 🙂
Fritule which are deep fried soft balls of dough usually made during festivities like Christmas are one of the most popular and relatively easy desserts to make (being a favourite to this writer also). You can typically find them on the prominence Riva sold by a couple of vendors which we urge you to try once you get a chance; just follow the inviting smell of these baked goods 🙂

Zagorski Štrukli

Zagorski Štrukli are a popular traditional Croatian dish served in households across Hrvatsko Zagorje and Zagreb regions in the north of the country, composed of dough and various types of filling which can be either cooked or baked.

Krempita

Krempita is a chantilly and custard cream cake dessert popular in several Central European countries. There are many regional variations, but they all include a puff pastry base and custard cream which just melts in your mouth, yum!

Knedle (plum dumplings)

Plum dumplings, popularly known as knedle , is a dish of boiled potato-dough dumplings filled with plums, popular in Central and East European cuisines. It’s a great healthy treat for children along with elders. The dish is tasty even to those that dislike plums.

Pašticada

If you are in need of that “home cooked” quick bite, “Pašticada” is a great choice. The dish is made out of stewed beef cooked in a special sauce with various spices added to it. It’s one of the, if not the most Dalmatian thing you can taste, usually served with Njoki (Gnocchi) or pasta. While it may not look so impressive, your taste buds will be delighted by the tender meat that’s full of flavour, being a favourite among many locals.

What to know

Croatia is chock full of mediterranean dishes that are bound to open up your palate. After all it is almost rude not to try out the local cuisine when visiting new and unfamiliar territory. So make the most out of your trip and try some of the most notable local food that is bound to widen your taste palate.

Food is after all one of the best things to try when visiting a new country. The wide array of flavours making the trip a lot easier; especially if you’re a foodie that loves eating/trying out new dishes.
