Christmas Fairs in Croatia

Winter is a one of the most loved and festive seasons. The cold weather offering a perfect opportunity to relax and drink a hot beverage whilst warming up next to a fireplace, the crackling of flames being a rather relaxing sound as the Christmas fair approaches.

Croatia is a country that’s famous for it’s Summer activities such a swimming, boat tours, walking tours and adrenaline tours. But Croatia’s other seasons shouldn’t be underestimated, such as winter 🙂

Winter is a magical season for most as the holidays approach. The musical melody of Christmas songs signifying the start of Christmas fairs all around Croatia. The main districts of various towns decorate the streets with small little “houses”, with vendors selling various souvenirs, candy and Christmas cakes/desserts.

Christmas fairs across Croatia

The biggest cities in Croatia are also the most popular for big Christmas fair gatherings. Zagreb, the main city of Croatia being a popular destination among Croatians and neighbouring countries for it’s huge celebration and decor, several dozen stands exclusively selling popular desserts like “Fritule”, “Uštipci” and various other hot meals and beverages. It’s no mistake that Zagreb deserves to be one of the main choices to spend your Christmas here in Croatia, but that doesn’t mean it’s made for you.

Split is the second largest city, featuring a long line of small “houses” filled with various vendors and treats to taste and admire. Several places around the old town singing and enjoying the company of others as they give in on the festive season.

You can expect to see a couple of skating rings in several Croatia’s towns which offer a great and fun experience for you and your clumsy family/friends :). A popular thought when you think of the Christmas fair is snow, but not every town is lucky to have a white Christmas. Snow being almost a luxury for the coastal towns like Split and Dubrovnik, but while those cities aren’t expected to have snow, Zagreb and the mountainous area is covered in Snow constantly during the Winter period which offers beautiful opportunities for a photograph or two.

Christmas food and drinks

You might be wondering if Croatia has some strange food and drinks during the festivities of the Christmas fair, but you might be or might not be surprised that it isn’t that different from any other country in the world in terms of food and drinks. The fair vendors selling various Croatian desserts, cookies, cakes. One of the most popular being “Fritule” and “Uštipci”, whilst the drinks being “Hot Chocolate”, “Boiled Wine” (I know it sounds weird, but it’s really delicious and enjoyed by many) and “Craft Beers” to warm you up during the cold weather. 🙂

Where to stay?

As the festivities go on late at night, drinking and enjoying the Christmas spirit with some Boiled Wine whilst singing along to the carols, but you may need to relax and get some sleep at some point during the festivities 🙂
Whether you are celebrating Christmas around Zagreb in hotels such as Sheraton or you are exploring the Diocletian Palace in Split, wanting a cozy studio apartment or apartment to relax in with your friends/family. You have plenty of options to choose from. 🙂
