History of Omiš

Omiš gaining its name from the Slavic Holm, Hum being an Illyrian translation of the Greek word “Onaion” which means “hill” or rather “place on the hill”. The town has close connections in the past with Corsairs of Almissa whose ships (Sagittas) were ideal for hit & run tactics due to how nimble they were by retreating into the mouth of Cetina River. What made the ships so effective was their buoyancy that allowed them to pass above the underwater wall which other ships would maroon on if given chase. The fortress that overlooks Omiš for centuries now was built during the Croatian-Ottoman wars as primary defense against the Ottoman Empire.
